“I didn’t even know I was qualified!” – The ups (and downs) of applying as a “frequent driver”

Paris – May 27, 2026: In response to the recent sharp rise in fuel prices, the French government has introduced special support measures for so-called “frequent drivers.” The measure aims to reduce the financial burden for those who travel long distances daily by personal vehicle for professional purposes such as commuting. With the recently introduced online calculator, citizens can check whether they qualify for this support, which has led to some unexpected results in certain cases.

The support is a one-time payment of 50 euros, which corresponds to a reduction equivalent to 20 cents per liter for an average fuel consumption over three months. To receive this support, certain criteria must be met. Applicants must be tax residents of France and at least 16 years old as of December 31, 2024. Additionally, applicants must be employees or self-employed persons, and in 2024, household income must not exceed 16,880 euros per year.

The definition of “frequent drivers” refers to those who travel at least 15 kilometers daily for commuting to work or cover at least 8,000 kilometers annually for professional reasons. This support targets personal vehicles equipped with thermal engines or non-plug-in hybrid engines that are regularly insured and used.

Applications are made through the personal online portal at impots.gouv.fr. Starting May 27, 2026, qualified individuals can apply. Once approved, the support payment will be transferred to the designated bank account within approximately 10 days.

Despite clear criteria, users of the online calculator have experienced unexpected outcomes. Some who did not expect to qualify found that they did, while others who expected to benefit were excluded. These discrepancies raise questions about the system’s accuracy and user-friendliness.

The government stated that the online calculator is based on the information provided and emphasized that the final eligibility decision is made after detailed review. The calculator is intended as a preliminary tool, and in case of uncertainty, direct contact with the relevant agencies is recommended.

This measure primarily focuses on easing the financial burden for those who use vehicles daily for professional reasons. It is also part of the government’s comprehensive plan to mitigate the impact of rising fuel prices and enhance workers’ mobility.
