Etretat Secures Vulnerable Cliff Section Against Rockfalls

Etretat – 23 July 2026: The town of Etretat has secured a section of its cliffs classified as unstable. Specially trained industrial climbers worked directly on the rock face and controlled the removal of a large piece of rock. The purpose of the operation was to prevent an unpredictable collapse in an area at significant risk of rockfall.

According to the report, the operation was carried out using crowbars and under special safety precautions. The crews had to rappel down the cliff to reach the vulnerable rock precisely. Such work is considered technically demanding because loose material, weather conditions and the exposed coastal location must all be taken into account at the same time.

The municipality on the Alabaster Coast has long faced risks from coastal erosion and movement in the chalk cliffs. In its municipal information document on natural hazards, Etretat explicitly lists rock movements and coastal erosion as dangers. The local administration has therefore imposed strict access rules for several sections of the coastline.

The reported stabilization work is intended to prevent rock from breaking loose without warning and falling onto lower-lying areas. Details on the exact size of the removed section, the duration of the operation or whether further work will follow were not initially released. No detailed information was available on possible temporary closures at the site either.

For visitors, conditions at the cliffs remain particularly sensitive. The municipal administration points out that certain access routes, tunnels and beach sections must not be entered because of hazards posed by the rocks. Access is permitted only in areas that have been officially opened. Barriers and local notices must therefore be strictly observed.

The controlled removal of unstable rock masses is a preventive measure and does not indicate that a major collapse has already occurred. It is intended to reduce the risk for walkers, residents and emergency personnel. Particularly during the summer visitor season, Etretat faces the task of balancing public safety with access to one of Normandy’s best-known coastal destinations.

In addition, the Seine-Maritime Prefecture named Etretat in March 2026 as a municipality affected by the consequences of Storm Goretti on 8 and 9 January 2026. However, the current cliff stabilization is the focus as an independent municipal preventive measure. What remains crucial is that vulnerable areas are continuously monitored and secured in good time when necessary.
