Étretat secures a rock mass at risk of collapse on the cliff

Etretat – 24/07/2026: On the chalk cliffs of Etretat, in Seine-Maritime, a rock block at imminent risk of falling was removed in a controlled manner. Three specially trained industrial climbers deliberately dislodged the approximately 400-kilogram block from its position on Wednesday, 22 July. It subsequently fell onto the beach. The municipality had commissioned the operation from the specialists following a risk assessment.

The operation aimed to prevent an uncontrolled fall in a coastal area heavily frequented by visitors. According to the response team, relatively low pressure had already been sufficient to separate the rock from the substrate. This highlights the instability of some parts of the cliffs and the difficulty of predicting rock behavior on site.

The work was carried out just days before the peak summer holiday season. Etretat is one of the most visited excursion destinations on Normandy’s Alabaster Coast. The municipality and the contracted specialists aim to reduce hazards at particularly exposed locations through interventions of this kind. However, it is not possible to completely eliminate the risk, as the chalk cliffs are constantly changing.

Erosion caused by wind, rain, frost and water seepage gradually loosens the rock. Specialists point out that rocks and larger masses of stone regularly break away along the Seine-Maritime coast. Therefore, the controlled removal of specific unstable blocks does not replace general caution: even after a safety measure, new danger spots may emerge on other sections.

The town of Etretat has already restricted access to several areas of its coastal strip by municipal order. The affected areas include certain tunnels and descents in the cliffs. The municipality justifies these rules by the risk of rockfalls, the retreat of the coastline and risks arising from tides. The beach is not freely accessible outside the promenade area.

Visitors should therefore strictly observe barriers and information signs, and should not remain directly at the foot of the cliffs or on collapse edges. Especially in changing weather conditions, the stability of the rock can vary at short notice. Those moving along the coast should also take tidal schedules into account to avoid having return routes cut off by the water.

The intervention of 22 July shows that the municipality is organizing safety measures for this prominent rocky landscape more intensively ahead of the summer season. The aim is not to preserve every individual rock formation, but to protect people in public areas. The decision on possible further controlled removal of unstable sections of the cliffs will be made after assessment by specialists.
