Filling station off the A13: when taking the exit really pays off

This is precisely what a current comparison by France Télévisions examines. The result primarily calls for caution: it is not only the amount displayed on the price sign that matters, but the total cost of the detour.

Motorway petrol stations have traditionally often charged higher prices because they are accessible around the clock and must operate at roadside service areas. For travellers, leaving the motorway therefore initially appears to be a simple way to save money. However, even a few additional kilometres increase fuel consumption. There is also lost time, possible traffic jams at interchanges and, if applicable, additional toll costs when returning.

Whether the detour is worthwhile depends primarily on the amount of fuel purchased. With an almost empty tank, a significant difference in price per litre can offset the additional costs of leaving the route. By contrast, those who add only a few litres usually save too little to justify the extra fuel consumption economically. The type of vehicle, traffic conditions and the distance to the nearest petrol station off the motorway also significantly affect the calculation.

There is another special feature on the A13 between Paris and Normandy: on certain sections of the route, a barrier-free toll system is in operation. Drivers planning to leave the motorway should therefore check the route and possible payment obligations in advance. At the start of a busy summer weekend, this question is particularly relevant. Bison Futé expects heavy traffic on several major routes from 24 to 26 July 2026. In such situations, a supposedly cheaper petrol station off the motorway may lose its financial advantage due to waiting times. On the other hand, those already planning a break can more easily incorporate a price comparison into their route.

So the simple rule of thumb is: first multiply the difference in price per litre by the planned amount of fuel, then subtract the fuel consumption and possible additional costs of the detour. If the difference is small, filling up at the nearest motorway service station is often the more practical choice. However, if there is a significantly cheaper petrol station nearby and a large amount of fuel is needed, leaving the motorway can be worthwhile.
