Strong public support assists firefighters during forest fire near Biscarrosse

Biscarrosse – 24 July 2026: Firefighters battling the ongoing forest fire in the north of the Landes department are receiving broad support from the public and businesses. According to reports from the scene, farmers are providing water tanks, among other resources. Private individuals are also offering assistance. The municipality of Biscarrosse intends to coordinate these offers so that they genuinely support the ongoing operation and do not place an additional burden on rescue efforts.

The fire broke out near Biscarrosse on Thursday, 23 July. The Landes Prefecture initially reported the deployment of 150 firefighters, 20 forest-fire units and several aircraft. By Friday evening, nearly 500 emergency personnel were on site, according to the authorities. They continue to fight the spread of the fire in an area that is particularly vulnerable due to dry vegetation and a high fire risk.

The visible willingness to help ranges from agricultural businesses to local residents. Water reserves and technical equipment can primarily make logistical support easier during a prolonged operation. However, the specific use of such resources is decided by the incident command. Volunteers should therefore not drive into cordoned-off areas or approach the fire zones on their own initiative, but instead offer their support through the channels designated by the city.

On 24 July, Biscarrosse introduced a procedure for centrally registering offers of assistance. Interested parties can state what support they can provide. The city announced that it would review incoming submissions and respond if needed. The aim is to prevent people, vehicles or materials from gathering in an uncoordinated manner at assembly points and access roads.

The situation also affects neighboring municipalities. In Sanguinet, traffic measures were ordered due to the development of the fire; the route along Departmental Road 46 towards Parentis was partially restricted. Such closures are intended to ensure that emergency crews have unobstructed access routes and to keep people away from hazardous areas. Current instructions from the authorities take priority over private aid initiatives.

The Landes department has been under the highest official forest-fire danger alert level since 21 July. The Prefecture cited weather conditions, the state of vegetation and an assessment by specialists. For firefighters, this means that any additional fire can quickly tie up considerable resources. Support from the region is therefore most effective when it is coordinated, safe and geared towards specific requirements.

As of Friday evening, the fire near Biscarrosse had still not been declared over. The authorities are coordinating measures through the Prefecture’s crisis unit. Residents and visitors should follow official notices concerning evacuations, road closures and possible restrictions. Willingness to help remains important, but when protecting people and emergency personnel, direction by firefighters and authorities comes first.
