A new star is shining on the Côte d’Azur – and its name is Nice.
For a long time, this charming city remained in the shadow of its glamorous neighbours, Cannes and Monaco. But what has developed in recent years around the famous Promenade des Anglais goes far beyond a simple image change. It is a renaissance of luxury, finely crafted between tradition, vision and a keen sense of contemporary elegance.
3,000 new rooms – and newfound confidence
Since 2020, around 3,000 additional hotel rooms have been created in Nice. More than 60% of them are in the four- and five-star segment – a clear statement to the international travel market. The Arénas district, close to the airport, has in particular become a hotspot for upscale accommodation. More than 1,100 new rooms have opened there alone.
Another figure is even more impressive: luxury hotels now account for 28% of Nice’s hotel market – a considerable leap from 23% ten years ago. By comparison, Paris reaches 24%, while Lyon only reaches 11%. The message is clear: Nice now plays in the big league.
The city’s new jewels
Several newcomers to the hotel landscape are bringing renewed sparkle – and setting new benchmarks in architecture, service and experience.
Maison Albar – Le Victoria, for example: a boutique hotel with 132 elegant rooms, a 600 m² spa, a rooftop restaurant with sea views, and a shopping arcade that brings together luxury and the art of living. You can feel it from the moment you enter: this is not an ordinary stay, but an invitation into a world of its own.
Equally impressive: the Anantara Plaza Nice. A carefully restored Belle Époque building that now combines modern comfort with the charm of yesteryear. The rooftop restaurant “SEEN” offers not only magnificent views, but also an atmosphere that effortlessly shifts from business travel to a relaxing getaway.
And there is also the Hôtel du Couvent – a former 17th-century convent that has been converted. With 88 rooms, three restaurants, thermal baths, and an open market, it aims to be an oasis of calm and sustainability. Old walls, new values – a perfect example of contemporary luxury steeped in history.
Stronger together: the Luxury Hotel Collection
Since 2022, eleven five-star hotels in Nice have joined forces within the “Luxury Hotel Collection.” They include the iconic Hôtel Negresco and the Palais de la Méditerranée. The aim of this alliance is nothing less than to establish Nice as a high-end destination on the French Riviera – through shared standards, joint marketing, and a consistent promise of quality.
Does that sound like a strategy?
It is – and it is paying off.
The Nice Effect: Much More Than a Beautiful Appearance
Anyone strolling through Nice’s old town today, passing through elegant hotel lobbies or settling in for an aperitif on rooftop terraces quickly notices: this city has reinvented itself. Without losing its soul.
The blend of Mediterranean ease, urban comfort and cultural depth hits the mark. Between market stalls and museum visits, between business meetings and rooftop dinners, a new self-awareness is emerging: Nice is no longer a stopover. Nice is a destination.
A rhetorical question is permitted: when is luxury truly luxury?
Perhaps precisely when it does not impose itself, but invites. When it does not merely shine, but moves you.
Conclusion? No Conclusion – But a Perspective
Nice has seized its opportunity. With courage, finesse – and a dose of French spirit. The city is taking off, not loudly, but elegantly. And it shows that luxury can be more than a matter of price and splendor: an attitude, a feeling, an experience.
Those who open themselves to it will be rewarded – with moments that remain.
