After attack on Berlin CSD: Suspect dead following police operation

Berlin – 27 July 2026: As the music at Christopher Street Day in Berlin had long been drawing people through the city center, a festive evening turned into a crime scene. Late on Saturday evening, 25 July, a white van drove into a crowd in the Tiergarten near the closing event. One person died; the parade and the planned concert were cancelled.

The initially reported number of 16 injured people was revised to 29 on Sunday. Several people suffered serious injuries, some of them initially life-threatening. Authorities have not yet publicly disclosed the identity of the person who was killed. For relatives and eyewitnesses, this marked the beginning of a night of uncertainty, emergency calls and the search for reliable information.

According to current findings, the driver left the vehicle and fled. Berlin police and prosecutors searched for the man for around a day. On Sunday evening, the suspect was tracked down in a Berlin suburb. According to investigators, he was killed by gunfire during a confrontation with police officers.

The public prosecutor’s office classifies the act as a suspected Islamist-motivated attack. The suspect was reportedly already known to security authorities and, according to investigators, had previously tried to join the terrorist militia Islamic State. These findings are part of the ongoing investigation; the exact sequence of events and a possible motive are still being examined.

The attack took place not far from the Brandenburg Gate, where Berlin’s CSD programme was due to conclude. The event is one of Europe’s largest Pride demonstrations and attracts hundreds of thousands of people every year. On Saturday, it ended amid sirens, ambulances and cordoned-off paths through the Tiergarten.

Berlin’s Governing Mayor Kai Wegner described the attack as an attack on the free and open urban society. Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said the security authorities must now fully investigate the background to the crime. Police called on people who took photos or videos in the Tiergarten area to provide the material for the investigation.

Medical care remains the priority for those injured and their families. At the same time, investigators are evaluating traces found on the vehicle, image material and witness statements. What is clear so far is this: the violence struck people who had taken to the streets in Berlin on 25 July 2026 for visibility, self-determination and equal rights.
