After Major Fire in Le Porge, Frustration Grows Among Those Affected

Le Porge – 28 July 2026: Following the devastating forest fire north of the Bassin d’Arcachon, numerous residents of Le Porge are facing the ruins of their homes. Mayor Martial Zaninetti put the number of completely burned-down homes in his municipality at at least 175. The fire broke out in Saumos on 22 July and subsequently spread toward Le Porge and Lège-Cap-Ferret.

For many returning residents, the task of assessing the damage is now beginning. Buildings, vehicles and personal belongings were lost in the flames in several residential areas. Le Porge has 1,617 houses; based on the damage known so far, more than one in ten homes has been affected. According to local information, around half of the municipality’s approximately 15,000-hectare area was affected by the fire.

The temporarily calmer weather conditions made it easier for emergency crews to secure the fire perimeter. This also allowed residents to re-enter some destroyed neighborhoods. However, this does not amount to an all-clear. High temperatures and shifting winds could again encourage the fire to spread. According to reports on the operational situation, fire activity intensified again in the eastern area on Monday.

The frustration of many of those affected is directed above all at the feeling of having been left alone with the consequences after the evacuation. Residents reported receiving certainty about the condition of their homes only gradually. According to media reports, the municipality is preparing psychological support and seeking accommodation for people whose homes have become uninhabitable. Clear rules are also needed for access to the cordoned-off areas.

Security forces remain strongly present in the region. For its operation in Gironde, the Gendarmerie mobilized, among other resources, mobile units, a helicopter, drones and maritime forces. They support evacuations and traffic management, protect restricted areas and keep emergency routes clear. They are also intended to prevent residents from returning to zones that remain at risk without authorization.

Smoke exposure also continues. Atmo Nouvelle-Aquitaine is monitoring air quality in areas affected by the fires in Gironde and the Landes department. Depending on wind direction, pollution levels can change rapidly from place to place. Particularly vulnerable people therefore depend on official guidance.

In addition to further securing the fire zones, Le Porge must now organize accommodation, support families and provide guidance to those affected on insurance matters. The confirmed figure of at least 175 destroyed houses describes only part of the losses: for many residents, their homes also contained personal memories and the familiar environment they have now lost.
