Gironde: New Fire Outbreaks Put Firefighters Under Time Pressure

Lanton – 30 July 2026: After several calmer days, forest fires in Gironde have flared up again. On Wednesday, 29 July, emergency services reported severe fire outbreaks near Lanton, in the Blagon district, and in Le Temple. Temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius, dried-out vegetation and very low humidity hampered firefighting efforts. Under these conditions, even small embers can ignite new flames that spread rapidly through the pine forests.

The large forest fire broke out on 22 July in the Saumos area and spread across large parts of the region north of the Bassin d’Arcachon. Authorities list Saumos, Le Temple, Sainte-Helene, Le Porge, Lege-Cap-Ferret, Ares, Andernos-les-Bains and Marcheprime among the affected municipalities. Several roads and cycle paths remained closed so that firefighters and emergency services could use access routes and key safety corridors. Residents and visitors were urged to comply with the closures.

The new fires affected emergency crews during a weather situation already considered particularly dangerous even before peak heat was reached. Local temperatures of around or above 40 degrees Celsius had been forecast for Wednesday in southwestern France. Although lighter winds can slow the immediate spread of flames, persistent heat removes further moisture from soil, undergrowth and trees. Firefighters must therefore also monitor areas where the open fire front had previously been considered stabilized.

On 27 July, the municipality of Lanton announced that the fire near Blagon had initially been contained. Around one hundred firefighters and additional helpers were deployed there. Additional firebreaks were prepared as a precaution, including in the direction of Andernos-les-Bains. Such clearings are intended to give emergency crews room to operate and prevent flames from spreading unchecked to further forest areas or residential zones. However, the re-ignitions showed how provisional stabilization can be in extreme drought.

The Gironde Departmental Council continues to warn of a particularly high forest fire risk. Access to several forest areas and sensitive natural sites is prohibited. Open fires, smoking, and work and leisure activities that may produce sparks are also banned there. These restrictions are intended to protect both the public and firefighters: additional visitors would place strain on access routes and could make evacuations more difficult in the event of renewed spread.

Smoke can also have consequences beyond the actual fire site. Atmo Nouvelle-Aquitaine is therefore monitoring air quality developments in Gironde and the neighboring Landes department. The intensity of the fires and the respective wind direction are decisive factors in pollution levels. For emergency crews, controlling the fire outbreaks that flared up again near Lanton, Blagon and Le Temple on 29 July remained the most urgent task.
