Holiday Traffic: More Than 1,000 Kilometers of Traffic Jams on France’s Roads

Paris – 01.08.2026: The holiday changeover at the start of the month caused more than 1,000 kilometers of traffic jams at times on France’s roads on Saturday. The main routes to holiday destinations were particularly congested. Families traveling to the coast and the mountains encountered travelers returning to metropolitan areas after their July holidays.

The high traffic volume is typical of the first weekend of August, when departure and return waves overlap. France’s traffic forecasting service Bison Futé had warned of exceptionally difficult conditions for Saturday. Traffic jams were concentrated on long-distance routes linking Paris and other major cities with the Mediterranean region, the Atlantic coast and the Alps.

For Sunday, August 2, 2026, Bison Futé continues to expect significant disruptions. In the southern half of France, the red warning level is in effect for travel towards holiday destinations. The heaviest congestion is expected in the southwest and in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, particularly from early afternoon until the start of the evening.

Routes to the Atlantic coast and the southeast are also likely to remain heavily used. Because summer holidays in several European regions are triggering travel movements at the same time, traffic volumes will remain high beyond the weekend. Drivers should therefore expect longer journey times on major motorways. Bison Futé recommends checking traffic conditions for the relevant route immediately before departure.

Traffic volume in the greater Paris area was already considerable on Saturday. The A6 and A10 motorways are among the main outbound routes from the capital region and are regularly particularly congested during the holiday changeover. For Monday, August 3, 2026, the forecasting service expects heavy departure traffic there again, especially from the morning into the early afternoon.

Bison Futé’s warning maps distinguish between trips towards holiday destinations and return journeys, as well as between individual parts of the country. The red level indicates very difficult traffic conditions, but does not mean that roads have been officially closed. Travelers can limit delays by avoiding particularly congested time slots, planning breaks and paying attention to information on accidents or short-notice closures.

On Monday, traffic is likely to develop differently from region to region. While many holidaymakers will continue to travel in the southeast and along the Atlantic coast, congestion in Île-de-France will be concentrated on the main routes out of the metropolitan area. Bison Futé is again forecasting high traffic volumes on the A6 and A10 until early afternoon.
