Back in Cinemas with Dinosaurs: The Success Formula of Paw Patrol

Paris – 05.08.2026: The dogs of Paw Patrol are back in cinemas: “Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie” opens in France this Wednesday. For Ryder, Chase, Skye and Marshall, it is their third major big-screen outing. This time, a storm sweeps the rescue team onto an unexplored tropical island inhabited by dinosaurs, where a dormant volcano becomes a danger.

The film follows the tried-and-tested structure that guides preschool children through an easy-to-understand plot: An emergency occurs, the dogs contribute their respective skills, and order is restored in the end. On the island, the team meets Rex, a stranded dog with extensive dinosaur knowledge. Their adversary, Mayor Hellinger, triggers the volcano’s eruption through mining work.

That this manageable world also reaches cinema audiences is no coincidence. Paw Patrol began in 2013 as an animated television series and was conceived from the outset as a comprehensive brand. The Canadian toy company Spin Master developed the characters, vehicles and narrative world in close coordination. The emergency vehicles in children’s bedrooms gave rise to a system that connects series episodes, films, books, stage productions and licensed merchandise.

According to Spin Master, the series is now broadcast in nearly 180 countries and in more than 35 languages. Its international accessibility is based on clearly defined roles: police dog, firefighter dog, construction worker and pilot. Children are familiar with these occupations, the conflicts remain straightforward, and the characters require neither knowledge of a particular cultural context nor complicated prior knowledge. The concept is educationally simple but narratively highly efficient.

The analytics company Parrot Analytics has also ranked Paw Patrol among the three most in-demand children’s series worldwide for years. In addition to viewing figures, its measurements take into account streaming use, search interest and activity on social networks. In the case of a preschool series, however, many of these digital traces are generated indirectly by parents and families.

The first two theatrical films demonstrated that the format also works on the big screen. The 2021 film grossed $144 million worldwide, and the 2023 sequel exceeded that result. Cinema therefore barely changes the character of the series, instead expanding its familiar setup: The rescue mission becomes an adventure with a volcano, an island and prehistoric animals; the colors, voices and vehicles remain recognizable.

In France, the release coincides with the summer holidays, a favorable period for family films. Paw Patrol has a crucial advantage: Even very young children recognize the characters without parents or older siblings having to explain a complex fantasy universe to them in advance.
