“It was extremely hot for me last night”: In Broualan, even nighttime temperature records are being broken

Broualan, a small village in the Breton department of Ille-et-Vilaine, is normally known for its fresh Atlantic air. Even on warm spring days, the proximity to the ocean often ensures pleasant temperatures. But at the end of May 2026, the weather in Brittany played by very different rules.

“It was extremely hot for me this night, it was 28 degrees,” reports a resident. This sentence initially sounds like a memory of a vacation day on the Mediterranean. In reality, it comes from a region that many people associate more with windbreakers than with tropical nights.

It is precisely the nights that are currently causing a stir.

While high daytime temperatures may seem spectacular, unusually warm nights are considered particularly remarkable by meteorologists. The reason is clear: if temperatures barely drop after sunset, the body misses the much-needed cooling. Sleeping becomes more difficult, houses warm up, and the burden on the elderly or people with health problems increases significantly.

In Broualan and other places in Brittany, nighttime minimum temperatures were recorded these days that otherwise mainly occur in the height of summer. Also in nearby Dinard, the nighttime temperature exceeded 22 degrees, significantly surpassing previous May records. For many residents, the night felt more like late July than late May.

The exceptional heat is not limited to Brittany, however. In many regions in France, local temperature records were broken within a few days. Weather experts speak of an exceptionally early and simultaneously persistent heat phenomenon. The fact that such high nighttime values are already being measured in May underscores the special nature of the current weather situation.

Those who have lived in Broualan for decades are experiencing a remarkable change. In the past, mild summer evenings were considered pleasant and rarely stifling. Today, residents talk about bedrooms that barely cool down even after midnight. The heat lingers over the houses like a heavy blanket.

These are still just a few record events. Yet they show how strongly weather conditions also affect regions that have long been seen as relatively cool and balanced. Brittany, once synonymous with fresh sea air, is experiencing nights these days that are more reminiscent of southern coasts.
