Paris – 29.05.2026: Tension is rising in Paris: On Saturday, May 30, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) will face Arsenal in the Champions League final. While the city is preparing for the major sporting event and expecting numerous football fans and tourists, restaurateurs along the Champs-Élysées are primarily worried about potential economic losses. The extensive security measures intended to ensure an undisturbed and peaceful event could severely impact business operations on what is normally a lucrative evening.

Alexandre Bernard, President of the Union des Métiers et des Industries de l’Hôtellerie (UMIH) in Île-de-France, expressed his concerns in an interview with ICI Paris Île-de-France. He explained that several dozen restaurants on the famous boulevard will be affected by restrictions and may have to remain closed. “Regardless of whether Paris wins or loses, the economic damages will be the same,” Bernard said. The closures particularly affect evening business, which is crucial for many establishments.

The Paris city administration has implemented extensive security measures to prevent mass gatherings and incidents. According to a report by Europe1, around 22,000 police officers and gendarmes will be deployed across France, with 8,000 stationed in Paris and the surrounding area alone. These measures also include the closure of certain metro stations and traffic restrictions in central areas.

However, these security precautions mean that access to restaurants on the Champs-Élysées is made more difficult. Customers may be deterred or prevented from visiting due to roadblocks and police presence. Bernard emphasized that, despite the necessity of such measures, a balance must be found from the restaurateurs’ perspective to avoid harming local businesses.

The city administration stresses that the safety of citizens and all involved parties is the highest priority, while also considering economic interests. Nevertheless, the actual impact on the gastronomy sector remains uncertain and will only be fully assessed after the match.

The Champions League final presents Paris with the challenge of guaranteeing both a safe stadium experience and peaceful celebrations, while also supporting the vibrant economy, especially in hospitality businesses. The coming days and weeks will show how well this tension can be managed and what lessons can be drawn for future major events.

Overall, the football event is not only a sporting highlight but also a significant test for urban development, security planning, and the economic cohesion of local communities in Paris.
