France under extreme heatwave – government under pressure

Paris – 28.05.2026: France is currently experiencing an exceptional heatwave with record temperatures for the season. In several regions, including Paris, temperatures of up to 35 degrees Celsius were recorded on Wednesday, an unusually high value for May. These extreme values have already led to seven deaths, mainly among the elderly and people with vulnerable health.

The national meteorological institute Météo-France has issued an orange heat warning for many departments, including the capital. This is valid until early Friday morning. Authorities urgently advise the public to stay in the shade or in cooled spaces as much as possible during the hottest hours of the day, to drink enough fluids, and to avoid physical exertion. Additionally, extra attention is advised for vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly.

The government under Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu is facing growing criticism for its handling of the crisis. Despite a recently held crisis session, in which a “resistance plan until September” was presented, opposition parties and environmental organizations criticize the restrained response. Marine Tondelier, chairwoman of the Green party “Les Écologistes,” demands further measures due to the increasing extreme weather situations, including the introduction of a “climate protection leave.” This model, which is already being tested in Spain, allows employees to take up to five additional days off on particularly hot days.

Although the warnings are clearly communicated, many people stick to their usual activities, increasing the risk of further heat-related health problems. The government calls on the population to take the preventive recommendations seriously and to seek medical help immediately if symptoms occur.

The current heatwave is associated with the effects of global climate change, which intensifies such extreme weather conditions. Scientific studies warn of an increase in heatwaves, whose intensity and frequency could further increase unless consistent climate protection and adaptation measures are taken.

A gradual temperature decrease is expected in the coming days, starting in the west of France. However, simultaneously rising humidity may keep the burden on the population high. Authorities continuously monitor the situation and are prepared to take further protective measures if necessary.

The recent events highlight the importance of enhanced prevention and adaptation to climate change at all levels. Only through close cooperation between politics, science, and society can resilience against such extreme events be increased and the impact on health and infrastructure be limited.
