Forest Owners in Gironde Criticize Felling After Major Fire

Gironde – 08/08/2026: Following the major fire near the Arcachon Basin, forest owners are lamenting the loss of healthy stands caused by tactical felling. According to Franceinfo, trees were felled in great haste across more than 500 hectares during the operation in order to create firebreaks against the flames. Some affected owners report that they were neither contacted nor involved before the intervention.

The fire broke out on 22 July 2026 in Gironde and, according to the Gendarmerie, engulfed more than 32,000 hectares of forest within a few days. During the exceptionally large-scale operation, protecting the population, evacuations and securing particularly vulnerable areas took priority over the usual coordination with individual landowners.

Tactical firebreaks are intended to remove combustible material and provide emergency crews with access routes and defensive lines. At the end of July, the prefecture stated that the military, the DFCI forest-fire prevention service and the National Forestry Office, ONF, had created more than 100 kilometres of such breaks. Their purpose was to prevent the fire from spreading further towards more densely populated areas and critical infrastructure.

For owners, however, such interventions can have significant economic consequences. Pine trees are managed over decades. When mature trees initially spared by the fire are felled, future timber revenues are lost; at the same time, the conditions for reforestation and maintenance of the land change. Franceinfo quotes affected parties who particularly criticize the fact that the extent and boundaries of the felling only became apparent to them after the work had been completed.

They say their protest is not directed against the protection of human lives. Rather, the dispute concerns how the burdens of an operational decision taken under severe time pressure are distributed. A report by the National Assembly cites the identification of affected owners, possible compensation and the use of felled timber as issues that must be settled following tactical felling.

The emergency organizations point to the special conditions of the fire. In extreme drought and rapidly shifting winds, open corridors can buy crews time and create new lines of attack. During the fire, the Gendarmerie described the situation as unprecedented and reported that more than 900 personnel had been deployed in Gironde.

Once the acute emergency response has ended, the administratively difficult review begins. Forest owners are calling for precise mapping of the cleared plots, comprehensible criteria for assessing damage and transparent compensation rules. It must also be clarified who is entitled to the felled timber and how its value is to be credited. This requires plot-by-plot documentation of the interventions, property boundaries and the condition of the affected stands.
