European Swimming Championships in Paris: High Diving on the Seine

Paris – 08/08/2026: At the European Aquatics Championships, the Seine will become the stage for high diving this Saturday. Near the Eiffel Tower, athletes will compete from a 20-meter platform. The spectacular setting also requires considerable safety measures from organizers: the takeoff area, entry zone and water quality must be continuously monitored.

The discipline is part of the European Championships program, which is being held from July 31 to August 16 in Paris and Saint-Denis. Pool swimming, traditional diving and artistic swimming are taking place mainly at the Olympic Aquatics Centre in Saint-Denis. The Seine, meanwhile, serves as the competition venue for open-water swimming and high diving. In doing so, organizers are drawing on locations and infrastructure that were already used or modernized in connection with the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Training on the river was temporarily suspended on Thursday after traces of hydrocarbons were detected upstream. According to the French Swimming Federation, the affected area was treated. Athletes were able to return to the water on Friday. The competition scheduled for Saturday remained on the program.

The interruption is a reminder of how strongly sporting events in an urban river depend on current conditions. Before the 2024 Games, the state and local authorities financed extensive work to reduce wastewater discharges and improve rainwater management. Nevertheless, rainfall, currents and isolated contamination can alter water quality at short notice. Checks are therefore part of immediate competition planning.

For Paris, the European Championships also mark a return to its sporting history. The French capital last hosted the continental aquatics event in 1931; France last staged the championships in 1987. More than 1,000 athletes across several disciplines are registered for the 2026 competitions. The concept combines modern sports facilities with publicly visible venues across the city.

In high diving, the preliminary rounds are followed by the final dives and medal decisions. Unlike traditional pool diving, the takeoff takes place from a considerably greater height; body control, precise rotation and the cleanest possible entry into the water are therefore especially important. The Seine provides an unusual arena for this: the competition is not held behind the facades of a stadium, but before spectators in the heart of Paris. Following treatment of the affected stretch of river and the resumption of training, the program was able to continue as scheduled on August 8.
