France during the extreme heat wave – government under pressure

Paris – 28.05.2026: France is currently suffering from an extraordinary heatwave bringing record temperatures for this season. In several regions, including Paris, temperatures of up to 35 degrees Celsius were recorded on Wednesday, which is unusually high for May. These extreme values have already led to seven deaths, mostly among the elderly and people with health problems.

The national meteorological institute Météo-France has issued an orange heat warning for many departments, including the capital. It is in effect until Friday morning. Authorities strongly recommend that the population stay in the shade or air-conditioned spaces during the hottest hours of the day, drink sufficient fluids, and avoid physical exertion. They also advise paying special attention to vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly.

The government, led by Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, is facing growing criticism over its crisis management. Despite a quickly convened crisis meeting where a “resistance plan until September” was presented, opposition parties and environmental organizations criticize the indecisive response. Marine Tondelier, head of the Greens “Ecologists,” demands more extensive measures in light of the increase in extreme weather events, including the introduction of “climate holidays.” This model, already being tested in Spain, allows workers to take up to five additional days off on particularly hot days.

Although the warnings are clearly communicated, many people continue their usual activities, increasing the risk of new heat-related illnesses. The government urges the population to take the prevention recommendations seriously and to seek medical help immediately if symptoms appear.

The current heatwave is linked to the effects of global climate change, which intensifies such weather extremes. Scientific studies warn of an increase in the frequency and intensity of heatwaves if systemic climate protection and adaptation measures are not implemented.

In the coming days, a gradual temperature drop is expected, starting from western France. However, a simultaneous increase in humidity may keep the strain on the population high. Authorities continuously monitor the situation and are ready to introduce additional protective measures if necessary.
