Four dead after Russian attack on Kyiv and surrounding area

Brovary – 09.08.2026: At least four people were killed in Russian attacks on Kyiv and the surrounding area during the night of August 8. According to Ukrainian authorities, a three-year-old child and the child’s grandparents died in the Brovary district northeast of the capital after several drones struck the family’s home. The building was destroyed, while outbuildings and vehicles were also damaged.

Three other family members and a neighbor who had come to help were taken to hospital, according to the authorities. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said another person was killed in an attack involving six ballistic missiles targeting civilian infrastructure in Kyiv. The latest reports contained conflicting information on the total number of injured people. Ukrainian officials described those killed in Brovary and Kyiv as civilians.

The Ukrainian air force reported that the overnight wave of attacks involved a total of 151 drones, six ballistic missiles and other guided munitions. It said 135 drones were intercepted or otherwise neutralized. Such information about weapons deployed and intercepted cannot be independently and promptly verified under wartime conditions. The same applies to details concerning the respective targets and the extent of the damage.

Zelenskyy accompanied his statement with a renewed call for stronger air defense. According to him, Ukraine is receiving fewer Patriot interceptor missiles than last year. The system is among the few available means of countering ballistic missiles. The Ukrainian president also said that Washington had in principle approved the production of Patriot interceptor missiles in Ukraine. However, pending approvals were delaying the start.

The attacks took place during a period of intense Russian air strikes on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. Moscow regularly states that its attacks target military or logistical objectives. Ukrainian authorities, by contrast, repeatedly report strikes on residential buildings and other civilian facilities. The differing accounts can often only be independently verified to a limited extent.

At the same time, Ukraine continued its drone attacks on targets in Russia. Russian regional authorities reported deaths and injuries in the Belgorod region bordering Ukraine on August 9, as well as damage to buildings. These reports also could not initially be independently confirmed. The overnight attack on Kyiv and Brovary thus forms part of the continued use of long-range weapons on both sides of the border; for the family in Brovary, it ended with three deaths and several injuries.
