Galați – May 29, 2026: Early Friday morning, a significant incident occurred in the southeastern Romanian city of Galați. A Russian drone invading Romanian airspace during an attack on Ukraine crashed on the roof of a 10-story residential building. The collision caused an explosion and fire on the top floor of the building. Two residents, a 51-year-old woman and a 14-year-old boy, suffered minor injuries and were treated on site. The remaining residents evacuated the building in time, resulting in no further injuries.
The Romanian Minister of Defense stated that the drone violated Romanian airspace during Russian attacks on civilian targets and infrastructure inside Ukraine near the Romanian border. The military deployed two F-16 fighter jets and one helicopter for surveillance operations. To reduce the risk to human lives, a decision was made not to shoot down the drone.
The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the incident as a “serious and irresponsible escalation” by Russia. Romania informed its allies and the NATO Secretary General about the situation and called for enhanced air defense measures. Additionally, the Russian ambassador was summoned to express the government’s concerns.
NATO and the European Union responded with strong criticism, describing the attack as a serious violation of European airspace. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned that Russia had “crossed another red line.” The incident has raised concerns about the increasing threat of Russian drone attacks in the region.
Since the outbreak of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, 47 drone fragments have been found on Romanian territory, but this is the first time a Russian drone has directly struck a residential building and caused civilian injuries. Romanian authorities announced plans to strengthen safety measures and expand cooperation with international partners to prevent similar incidents from recurring.
Experts view the incident as a challenge to NATO, clearly demonstrating the importance of effective air defense against asymmetric threats. A comprehensive investigation into the drone’s airspace violation and safety lapses is scheduled, and the results will form the basis for additional protective measures.
The international community faces the challenge of responding appropriately to such incidents without jeopardizing civilian safety. The Galați incident clearly shows how crucial cooperation among NATO member states is to ensure regional stability and prevent escalation.
