French newspapers take Google to competition authority over AI answers

Paris - 11 August 2026: The French publishers' association Alliance de la presse d'information generale (APIG) has referred Google's AI Overviews feature to the national competition authority. The association, which represents numerous national and regional daily newspapers, accuses the technology company of introducing the automatically generated summaries in France without prior consultation with publishers.AI Overviews appear above conventional search results and answer queries directly on the Google page.
