Gérardmer Tightens Water-Saving Measures – New Withdrawal From the Lake Not Confirmed

Gérardmer – 12.08.2026: Strict rules on water consumption are in force in Gérardmer in the Vosges due to the ongoing drought. On July 16, the town announced that the highest level of drought restrictions had been reached in its area. As a result, numerous uses that are not essential to supplying the population are prohibited.

According to the municipality, the bans include watering lawns and sports fields, as well as washing vehicles. Facades, roofs and sealed surfaces may generally not be cleaned with water either. Such measures are intended to reduce consumption at a time when natural inflows and available reserves are under pressure. The orders issued by the competent authorities and any narrowly defined exemptions apply in each case.

It remains unclear, however, whether the town is currently once again drawing water from Lac de Gérardmer to feed it into the drinking water network. A report circulated on August 12 presents such use as a current response to the drought. However, there is no confirmation of this in the most recent available statements from the town and the Vosges prefecture. They document the tense situation and the restrictions in force, but do not mention any ongoing operation of the lake pumping station for drinking water supply.

The distinction is significant: officially ordered conservation measures do not automatically mean that an extraordinary water source is already being used. Drawing lake water for the public network would be a specific technical emergency measure, usually requiring information on treatment, operation and monitoring. Without a current statement from the municipality or the relevant water authorities, it cannot be presented as an established fact for August 12.

In principle, the lake plays a role in planning for the local emergency water supply. Municipal drinking water supply documents describe technical provisions in the Ramberchamp area. However, this does not mean that the facility is actually being used at present. Such use was publicly reported during the severe drought in August 2022; older reports of this may create the impression of a current event when recirculated.

For residents and visitors, the published consumption restrictions therefore remain the main binding rules. Anyone wishing to use water for garden maintenance, cleaning or other non-priority purposes must comply with municipal and prefectural requirements. What is currently officially documented is the highest restriction level in Gérardmer and the resulting bans – but not a renewed supply of water from Lac de Gérardmer.
