Partial solar eclipse darkens the evening sky over France

Paris – 12 August 2026: On Wednesday evening, the Moon moved in front of the Sun over France, noticeably darkening the sky shortly before sunset. A partial solar eclipse could be observed throughout the country; in the far southwest, only a narrow portion of the solar disk remained visible at times. The path of total eclipse, however, ran across the Atlantic, Iceland and northern Spain.

In Paris, the astronomical event began at 7:22 p.m., according to calculations by NASA. It reached its peak around 8:17 p.m. and ended at 9:09 p.m. In the capital, the Moon covered around 92 percent of the visible solar disk. As the Sun was already low on the horizon, observers needed an unobstructed view to the west. Buildings, trees or gathering clouds could easily obscure the spectacle.

The eclipse was even more pronounced near the Spanish border. For Urepel in the département of Pyrénées-Atlantiques, a maximum coverage of nearly 99.8 percent had been calculated. Large parts of the Sun were also obscured along the southern Atlantic coast and in Corsica. However, it disappeared completely only a few kilometres south of the French-Spanish border. Within a narrow strip across northern Spain, the solar corona could be seen for a short time.

France lay outside this path of totality. Nevertheless, the extensive coverage altered lighting conditions in many places: colours appeared muted, shadows lost their definition, and twilight set in unusually early. A solar eclipse is caused by the precise alignment of the Sun, Moon and Earth during a new moon. Only where the Moon’s umbra reaches the Earth’s surface is the Sun completely obscured; in the surrounding penumbra, the eclipse remains partial.

French authorities and scientific institutions had issued strong warnings ahead of the event against observing it without protection. Looking directly at the Sun can permanently damage the retina even when only a narrow rim of light remains visible. Only certified eclipse glasses complying with ISO 12312-2 or indirect methods in which the image of the Sun is projected onto a surface are suitable. Ordinary sunglasses, soot-blackened glass and optical devices without appropriate filters do not provide sufficient protection.

It was the most striking solar eclipse over France since 11 August 1999, when the path of totality crossed parts of the country. According to astronomical institutions, a total solar eclipse will not reach mainland France again until 3 September 2081.
