Heat in Tours: Homes Become a Burden in the Sanitas District

Tours – 13 August 2026: In the Sanitas district of Tours, residents are suffering from homes that become intensely heated during the ongoing heat. In a report published on 12 August, local residents describe how their rooms offer virtually no protection during the day. Those who cannot leave the city and have no cool place to retreat to therefore spend even the hottest hours outdoors.

Those affected are making do with simple measures. Some shower or bathe several times a day, take chilled food outside with them, and avoid the warmest rooms. Their experiences point to a problem in densely built-up districts: facades, roofs and sealed surfaces store heat during the day and release it only slowly. As a result, homes can remain overheated even after sunset.

Warm nights are particularly difficult. Without nighttime cooling, sleep and recovery suffer; physical strain increases with every additional hot day. Météo-France defines a heatwave as a period when intense heat persists for several days and can pose a health risk even at night.

According to the weather agency, high temperatures can cause headaches, nausea, cramps and dehydration. Older people, very young children, people with chronic illnesses and socially isolated individuals are particularly at risk. This also includes people whose homes become severely overheated. Even healthy people can develop symptoms during physical work or outdoor sports.

How well residents can protect themselves depends largely on their housing situation. Shaded rooms, effective shutters and opportunities for cross-ventilation at night reduce the strain. Where these conditions are absent, residents must adapt their daily routines to the heat. It is recommended to keep windows and shutters closed during the hottest hours and to ventilate only once the outdoor temperature has fallen.

Météo-France also advises people to drink water regularly, cool their bodies and limit physical exertion. Those who can should temporarily seek out a significantly cooler place. Relatives and neighbors should contact people who live alone or whose health is weakened in particular. In case of discomfort or unusual symptoms, medical assistance can be requested via the French emergency number 15.

Tours was already repeatedly exposed to high temperatures in July. For the period from 4 to 19 July 2026, Météo-France documented a 16-day nationwide heatwave. In Tours, seven hot days were recorded between 9 and 15 July. The current accounts from Sanitas therefore follow an exceptionally long period of heat that had already warmed many buildings beforehand.
