Moïse Kouamé: A 17-Year-Old Tennis Wonder on the Path to Glory

Paris – 31.05.2026: Moïse Kouamé, only 17 years old and hailing from Sarcelles, impressively demonstrated his exceptional status as one of the greatest French tennis talents at the 2026 French Open. Ranked number 318 in the world, he received a wildcard for the tournament – and made excellent use of it. In the first Grand Slam match of his career, he decisively defeated former US Open champion Marin Čilić in straight sets (7:6, 6:2, 6:1). This made Kouamé the youngest player since 1991 to reach the second round at the French Open.

In the second round, he faced Argentine Adolfo Daniel Vallejo, seeded 71st. Kouamé started strong by winning the first two sets but then fell behind in the next two. With impressive mental strength, he fought back to clinch the dramatic fifth set tiebreak 7:6 (10:8). The nearly five-hour match was the longest of the tournament and propelled him into the round of 16 – an extraordinary achievement for the teenager in his first Grand Slam appearance.

In the round of 16, Kouamé faced experienced Chilean Alejandro Tabilo, a clay court specialist. Despite winning the first set, he was defeated after four hard-fought sets (4:6, 3:6, 4:6, 5:7).

Despite the loss, Kouamé’s performances at the French Open have drawn attention both in France and internationally. His ability to fight back under pressure and his physical and mental strength were praised repeatedly by experts and former pros like Richard Gasquet, who is part of his coaching team. Kouamé had already reached the quarterfinals in the junior competition of the French Open in 2024 and won several ITF titles before making the leap into professional tennis.

His development is marked by consistency and is regarded by many as similarly promising as that of young Loïs Boisson, who made a splash in 2025. Kouamé’s team includes Gasquet as well as family members, coaches, and agents supporting him on his journey.

The exciting performances of the young Frenchman at the 2026 French Open point to a very promising future. The tennis world is now closely watching him, as it is expected that Kouamé will soon be among the leading players in international tennis.
