Dijon – 30.05.2026: On the night of May 29 to 30, 2026, an incident occurred between Lyon and Paris, where two high-speed trains of the Italian railway company Trenitalia were blocked due to a technical failure in the Burgundy region. A total of 841 passengers were affected, having to endure several hours without air conditioning and electricity.
Around 11:45 p.m. on Friday night, the trains traveling from Lyon to Paris came to a halt between the departments of Yonne and Côte-d’Or. The exact cause of the breakdown was given by Trenitalia as an “infrastructure problem.” The trains had previously been rerouted onto the conventional track due to an incident on the main line and no longer had sufficient power to continue their journey.
The prefectures of the affected departments promptly mobilized rescue services to assist the passengers. They distributed water and offered support to travelers who required special assistance. In addition, units of the Côte-d’Or Gendarmerie were deployed to secure the area around the blocked trains. Despite the difficult conditions, evacuation of the passengers was not necessary.
The affected trains, a Frecciarossa from Lyon to Paris and another from Milan to Paris, remained stalled for over 10 hours. The journey was only able to resume on Saturday morning around 9:30 a.m. During this time, passengers were without power and air conditioning, leading to significant complaints. Some travelers reported extreme temperatures and poor ventilation, which further worsened the situation.
Trenitalia deployed technical teams to resolve the problem and restore train services. The company apologized for the inconvenience and assured that steps would be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future. Nevertheless, the question remains how such breakdowns can be avoided in a high-speed network to ensure passenger comfort and safety.
This incident again raises questions about the reliability and maintenance of high-speed trains. Given the increasing number of travelers and the importance of rail transport for mobility in Europe, it is essential that operators like Trenitalia continuously invest in the quality and safety of their services.
The affected passengers, who had to spend a night on the trains, expressed their disappointment about the incident and demanded compensation for the inconveniences suffered. It remains to be seen how Trenitalia will respond to these demands and what measures will be taken to restore travelers’ confidence in the company’s reliability.
