Demonstration against Vincent Bolloré in Paris: Cultural figures warn of violations of freedom of expression

Paris – May 30, 2026: On Saturday afternoon, dozens of people, including politician Jean-Luc Mélenchon and actress Adèle Haenel, gathered near the Olympia concert hall in Paris to protest. This protest opposes the influence that billionaire Vincent Bolloré exerts on media and culture.

The event was organized by the CGT Spectacle union and took place at Place Henri Salvador, very close to the Olympia. This concert hall belongs to the Canal+ group, whose main shareholder is Vincent Bolloré.

During the protest, Jean-Luc Mélenchon criticized the concentration of media ownership and the resulting threat to freedom of expression in France. He emphasized that Bolloré endangers cultural diversity and journalistic independence through his media empire. Mélenchon warned about the growing influence of a single actor threatening a pluralistic media environment and, furthermore, risking the undermining of democratic processes.

Adèle Haenel, who also attended, expressed similar concerns and cautioned against ideological monopolization of the media landscape. She emphasized that diverse and independent culture holds central importance in a democratic society and questioned the future impact individual investors might have in the cultural sector.

Protesters criticized Vincent Bolloré for exercising increasingly visible influence over various media and cultural institutions in France. They demanded strict regulation and enhanced transparency in the media sector to protect media independence and cultural diversity. They also pointed out the risk that economic interests could limit artistic freedom and diversity of opinion.

This protest is one of a series opposing Vincent Bolloré’s media-related activities. Prior to this, about 600 French filmmakers expressed concerns in a joint statement about media ownership concentration and warned that Bolloré’s influence posed a potential threat to cultural diversity. The debate over media concentration remains active in France and reflects fundamental concerns about the future of freedom of expression and cultural autonomy.

Supporters of Bolloré’s activities argue that increased efficiency and stronger market positions can promote investment and innovation. Critics, on the other hand, see concentration of power as a serious threat to democratic diversity and cultural independence. This protest highlights ongoing tensions and voices calling for broad societal discussion about the role of large media groups in France.

This debate remains a significant topic in politics and culture, illustrating the complex relationship between economic interests, cultural policy issues, and fundamental democratic values.
