Paris expects tens of thousands of fans this coming Sunday for the official celebration of the historic Champions League victory of Paris Saint-Germain. Between 85,000 and 90,000 people are expected at the Champ-de-Mars at the foot of the Eiffel Tower. The gates open from 2:00 PM. The PSG players want to present the European Cup on a specially built stage approximately 450 meters long.
The festivities take place after a night of great euphoria, but also significant tension. In Paris and other French cities, numerous riots followed the final win. Especially the Champs-Élysées and the area around Parc des Princes were heavily affected.
According to the authorities, 780 people were arrested nationwide, including about 480 in the Paris region. In addition, 57 members of the security forces were injured. The incidents included vandalism, arson, looting, and the use of fireworks against the police.
The Paris public prosecutor’s office reported that 277 people, including 82 minors, have been taken into police custody. They are suspected of, among other things, assault, theft, and vandalism.
The contrast between the sporting euphoria and the nighttime riots is clear. While PSG celebrates the greatest success in the club’s history, the joy of many supporters was overshadowed by the violence of a relatively small group.
Despite the incidents, the authorities are sticking to the official celebrations. A comprehensive security concept has been implemented for the events in Paris. Nationwide, approximately 22,000 police officers and gendarmes have been deployed. In addition, there are significant traffic and public transport restrictions around the Champ-de-Mars.
In addition to the fan celebration, a reception for the team is also planned at the Élysée Palace. The French capital hopes to honor the club’s sporting success in an orderly and festive setting.
