Farewell to Bernadette Chirac: France Honors a Formative Figure of the Fifth Republic

One week after her death, France bids farewell to Bernadette Chirac. The former Première dame, who passed away on June 5 at the age of 93, will initially be laid to rest in Paris. This will be followed by further memorial services in Corrèze, the region that shaped her political life for decades and with which her name remains inextricably linked.

Memorial Service in Paris with Prominent Guests

The central mourning ceremony will take place at the Basilica of Sainte-Clotilde in the 7th arrondissement of Paris. The location holds special symbolic significance for the Chirac family. In the nearby Sainte-Clotilde chapel, Bernadette Chodron de Courcel and Jacques Chirac were married in 1956. Additionally, the memorial service for their eldest daughter Laurence was held there in 2016.

Expected guests include numerous political associates as well as public figures. Among them are former Presidents Nicolas Sarkozy and François Hollande. Actress Line Renaud and Brigitte Macron are also expected. The latter took over the presidency of the Fondation des Hôpitaux after Bernadette Chirac, an institution with which the deceased was closely associated for many years.

Corrèze as Political and Personal Center

Following the ceremony in Paris, attention turns to Corrèze. Additional memorial events are planned there for the weekend. A religious service in the commune of Corrèze will be accompanied by a public tribute at the Domaine de Sédières. The family intends to give local residents the opportunity to say a personal farewell.

The choice of this location is no coincidence. Corrèze was the political stronghold of the Chirac couple for decades. While Jacques Chirac built his national career there, Bernadette Chirac also developed an independent political identity and gained strong support among the population.

More Than the Wife Beside the President

Although often seen publicly as the wife of Jacques Chirac, Bernadette Chirac left behind her own political legacy. For more than thirty years, she served as a general councillor for Corrèze, making her an exception among French Premières dames.

Her commitment to the “Pièces Jaunes” campaign, which raised donations for children’s hospitals, was especially impactful. Through this initiative, she gained recognition and popularity far beyond political divides.

With the memorial services in Paris and Corrèze, a chapter of French political history comes to an end. Bernadette Chirac embodied loyalty, perseverance, and political influence in an era closely associated with the Chirac name. Her death marks the farewell to one of the most well-known personalities of the Fifth Republic.
