Adductor problems: Léon Marchand again withdraws from 200 m freestyle in Saint-Étienne

Saint-Étienne – 30.06.2026: Léon Marchand has withdrawn his participation in the 200 m freestyle race of the Championnats de France at short notice. The 24-year-old complained on Monday after the 200 m breaststroke heats of pain in his right adductor, withdrew from the final that same evening and will not be on the starting blocks at the Raymond-Sommet swimming pool on Tuesday either. According to the support staff, this is a precautionary measure to avoid the risk of worsening.

The scene at the poolside was short but clear: after his series Marchand raised his hand, consulted the medical team and left the water visibly affected. Official start lists and media reports confirmed on Tuesday morning his renewed withdrawal from the 200 m freestyle. An initial medical assessment is available; further examinations are to determine whether starts on the upcoming competition days are still possible. The officials of the Fédération Française de Natation are keeping the status open for now in order to respond to clinical findings.

The withdrawal affects the championships both sportingly and organizationally. Marchand was entered in multiple events, including the 400 m and 200 m individual medley as well as the 200 m butterfly — disciplines in which he set international standards in recent years. His absence changes the dynamics of the finals and potentially impacts relay planning, especially for the 4×200 m freestyle. For coaching staffs this means examining alternatives and interpreting qualification criteria narrowly as long as the roster is strained by injuries or rest programs.

Medically: adductor problems can run a benign course, but premature loading carries the risk of relapse. In a dense competition calendar the team therefore relies on stepwise load management. The championships traditionally serve as a benchmark before international assignments; this year attention is on August with the European Championships in Paris. A rushed return would contradict long-term planning.

For the home crowd the absence means missing one of the driving forces of the championships. Nevertheless the sporting level remains high: several final fields are tightly packed, and the national rankings promise close decisions. Whether Marchand will return to the Saint-Étienne pool will be decided after the upcoming examinations. Until then the federation and his entourage ask for patience — the priority is a complete clarification of the injury and the athlete’s health.
