Christiane Commeau Murder Case: Anonymous Letters Lead to Resumption of Investigations

Chassieu – 13.06.2026: More than two decades after the violent death of Christiane Commeau near Lyon, new developments have occurred in the case. The 54-year-old woman had disappeared without a trace in October 2004 from her apartment in Chassieu. It was only in February 2005 that her body was discovered in a wooded area near Niévroz, in the Ain department. Investigations revealed that she had been killed by two shots to the neck. Despite thorough examinations, the perpetrator and motive of the crime had remained unknown for a long time.

At the end of 2025, two women in Voiron, about 70 kilometers from Chassieu, received anonymous letters. These deliveries contained excerpts from novels in the “San-Antonio” series, embellished with handwritten notes referring to major dates and significant events in Christiane Commeau’s life. One of the messages said, among other things: “What are you doing this Monday, September 30?” These clues aroused suspicion among the authorities that the sender had personal information about the victim.

Due to these new elements, the Paris prosecutor’s office in Nanterre, which has a unit specialized in unsolved cases, reopened the cold case in autumn 2025. The procedure had previously been closed without further action in 2015. Investigators now hope to be able to identify the culprit thanks to the fresh information.

In June 2026, the case was brought to public attention again on television: in the show “Call for Witnesses” on M6, viewers were invited to provide relevant clues to help solve the murder of Christiane Commeau. Particular emphasis was placed on the fact that the anonymous letters suggested a connection between the sender and the victim.

Christiane Commeau’s family declared themselves relieved by the resumption of investigations. For years they have demanded transparency and a fair handling of the case. The relatives are appealing to the public to pass on any information that could help resolve the crime.

Despite the prolonged wait and the complexity of the investigations, the murder remains unsolved to this day. Investigators still rely on public assistance and possible new leads to shed full light on this enigmatic crime. The Christiane Commeau case therefore remains a major priority for French justice and the families involved.

The role of the anonymous letters with their literary references constitutes an unusual aspect that renews public interest in this case. It remains to be seen in the coming months whether these clues will actually make it possible to identify the perpetrator.
