After Appeal Ruling: Marine Le Pen Announces 2027 Candidacy and Appeals to the Court of Cassation

Paris – 08.07.2026: The Cour d’appel de Paris on 7 July 2026 upheld the conviction of Marine Le Pen in the affair concerning funds of the European Parliament. The case concerns the years 2004 to 2016 and the employment of assistants. Reports mention a prison sentence with electronic monitoring as well as financial penalties; there are differing accounts regarding the exact scope of certain ancillary consequences. What is certain: the decision increases the legal pressure on the long-time leader of the Rassemblement National.

Only hours after the ruling Le Pen appeared on TF1’s 8 p.m. news. There she declared that she would run for the presidency in 2027 and immediately file a Pourvoi en cassation. The Court of Cassation examines only legal questions and procedural errors, not the assessment of evidence. According to lawyers, such a move does not automatically suspend the enforcement of the sentence. Nevertheless, a decision by the Cour de cassation could come before the election date and thereby reshape the situation.

Politically, observers interpret the rapid announcement as a show of force. It is intended to mobilize the party base, consolidate Le Pen’s internal leadership position vis-à-vis party leader Jordan Bardella, and steer the campaign early toward rule-of-law and institutional issues. Mixed reactions came from government and opposition: critics speak of a stress test for democratic norms, supporters point to the right to legal remedies and the presumption of innocence until a final decision is made.

It remains particularly disputed whether and to what extent any ancillary consequences of the ruling would affect participation in the ballots on 18 April and 2 May 2027. The decisive factors here are the exact phrasing of the judgment, possible suspensive effects and the deadlines for candidate registration. Several media outlets report that Le Pen can formally run at present; a definitive clarification, however, depends on the further course of proceedings.

The case joins previous disputes over the financing of political work in the European Parliament and raises practical questions for the election calendar: parties must plan campaign budgets, personnel and alliances while legal appeals run in parallel. For the political system of the Fifth Republic, the event is a stress test: it forces institutions, electoral authorities and the judiciary to draw a precise line between legitimate prosecution and equal opportunities in the contest for the highest office.
