Le Pontet – 16 July 2026: Following the fatal shooting of a motorist by a municipal police officer in the Avignon area, the Avignon public prosecutor’s office has requested an investigation into the officer for involuntary manslaughter. The prosecution also wants the police officer to be placed under judicial supervision. According to the information available, this would include a ban on carrying out his duties.
The 29-year-old driver died during the night of 15 July in Vedene, north of Avignon. According to the prosecutor’s office, he had initially evaded a police check. A patrol from the Le Pontet municipal police then began pursuing him. What happened in the minutes that followed is now at the center of the criminal investigation.
According to information made public so far, the driver allegedly tried to break through the checkpoint with his car. In the process, one police officer was injured in the foot. Another officer fired a shot that fatally struck the driver. According to media reports, the man was from the neighboring department of Bouches-du-Rhone. Authorities did not release his name.
The prosecutor’s office initially opened two separate investigations. One concerns suspected failure to comply with police instructions and violence against public officials using a vehicle. The second investigation focused on the circumstances of the fatal shot. The allegation of involuntary manslaughter now sought is the prosecutor’s legal assessment; an investigating judge will decide whether to formally open the investigation.
This neither establishes the police officer’s criminal responsibility nor conclusively assesses whether self-defense or defense of another person may have applied. Investigators must establish, in particular, the vehicle’s exact movements, the positions of the officers, the level of danger at the moment the shot was fired, and any possible video or radio recordings. Witness testimony and forensic findings are also likely to be crucial to reconstructing the events.
For the relatives of the deceased, this begins a proceeding intended to provide answers about a brief operation with far-reaching consequences. For the officer concerned, the prosecutor’s request represents, for the time being, a serious professional and personal turning point. The requested supervision and work ban are intended to ensure that the investigation can be conducted independently, without prejudging its outcome.
The case once again draws attention to operations following attempts to flee police checks, in which decisions are made within seconds. Precisely because a person has died and an officer used a firearm, a complete and sober clarification is now required. The justice system in Avignon faces the task of examining the events without premature assignment of blame and with consideration for everyone involved.
