After the Biscarrosse Wildfire: Residents Return to Destroyed Neighborhoods

Biscarrosse – 01.08.2026: After the severe wildfire in the north of the Landes department, residents of Biscarrosse and Parentis-en-Born are returning to destroyed or heavily damaged neighborhoods. Only there does the full scale of the devastation become visible. People who had to leave their homes in haste are searching for personal belongings and assessing what remains of their houses, properties and former daily lives.

The fire had spread rapidly in the Biscarrosse and Parentis-en-Born area since 23 July. The prefecture ordered extensive evacuations. According to official information, tens of thousands of people had to leave their accommodation at times. Roads were closed while firefighters, gendarmes and municipal services secured the affected areas.

The material toll is severe. According to a report published on 26 July, nearly 200 buildings were destroyed in the fire zone. These were not exclusively residential homes; local businesses were also affected. Owners and tenants must now document damage, notify insurers and determine whether their homes remain habitable. For some families, temporary accommodation has therefore become a longer-term solution.

Authorities allowed returns gradually and only in zones previously inspected by firefighters and gendarmes. On 25 July, around 3,000 Biscarrosse residents were initially allowed to return, followed by additional areas a day later. Other neighborhoods remained closed for the time being because of ongoing operations, possible smoldering hotspots and the risk of renewed ignition.

The fire area was still under intensive monitoring on 28 July. Firefighters carried out 40 operations that day, ten of them involving fire sites that had flared up again. According to the authorities, high temperatures increased the risk that remaining fire sources could spread again. As a result, not all evacuated residential areas were yet accessible.

Alongside securing the site, the focus is increasingly on assisting people who are temporarily or permanently without accommodation. Municipalities established reception services for evacuees. The Landes Chamber of Industry and Commerce called on businesses in the affected area to report damage and economic difficulties. The prefecture also published guidance on smoke exposure and available assistance.

Emergency services continue to inspect the burned perimeter and remove hazards. Returning therefore does not yet mean a return to normality: it remains subject to official authorization and, in many places, immediately leads to documenting losses for insurers and aid organizations. Authorities advise those affected to follow only official communications regarding access, traffic routes and safety measures.
