After the fire in Gironde: Oyster farmers fear for the summer season

Lège-Cap-Ferret – 04.08.2026: The wildfires in Gironde are continuing to affect the oyster industry at Cap Ferret even after the immediate danger has passed. Businesses around the Bassin d’Arcachon told Franceinfo that they suffered considerable losses during the peak summer season. According to the broadcaster, the region’s oyster farmers generate around 40 percent of their revenue in summer. Lost sales days therefore carry significant weight.

The fire broke out in Saumos on 22 July 2026 and spread towards Le Porge and Lège-Cap-Ferret. Authorities ordered extensive evacuations, while the Gendarmerie also supported operations on the water. The crisis hit a coastal region heavily dependent on tourism precisely during the weeks when oyster huts and sales stands receive particularly large numbers of holidaymakers, restaurant customers and regular patrons.

For many businesses, the immediate economic damage was caused less by destroyed farming facilities than by the temporary standstill in trade. Closed access routes, evacuations and visitors’ uncertainty interrupted sales. Losses on individual days in July can scarcely be recovered because of the short holiday period and limited capacity. Oysters can still be marketed, but the demand that was lost cannot simply be shifted to later weeks.

Other small businesses on the peninsula and in the northern Bassin d’Arcachon have also been affected. The Nouvelle-Aquitaine Chamber of Trades and Crafts set up crisis assistance for businesses during the fire emergency. The regional administration also pointed to disruptions to transport, accommodation, local services and tourism. The economic consequences therefore extend beyond shellfish farming.

In addition to lost revenue, producers are concerned about the quality of their goods. Smoke and firefighting operations have raised questions among businesses and customers about possible contamination. Shellfish farming areas in the Bassin d’Arcachon are subject to regular sanitary inspections. However, whether the fire affected individual stocks or batches can only be assessed on the basis of current tests of the oysters and farming waters.

Atmo Nouvelle-Aquitaine reported at times significant levels of smoke particles in the air during the fires. However, these readings do not allow conclusions to be drawn about oyster quality and do not replace testing of the water or products. For producers, the remainder of the season therefore depends on two factors: the return of visitors and reliable findings on whether their goods can be marketed. Regional business organizations and authorities have activated support services for affected companies.
