After the Fires, Businesses in Rognac Struggle to Restart

Rognac – 04.08.2026: One month after the severe fires in the Bouches-du-Rhône, the damage continues to burden numerous businesses. The fire of 1 July hit the Les Barjaquets business park in Rognac particularly hard: two companies were destroyed, according to reports from the region. For the entrepreneurs affected, the issues now include inventory and buildings, ongoing costs and the question of how they can continue their operations.

The economic consequences extend beyond burned-out warehouses. If machinery, stock, vehicles or digital work equipment become unusable, orders may also be lost. Even companies whose premises were not directly affected by the fire are suffering from road closures, smoke, disrupted supply chains or staff shortages. Retailers, tradespeople, construction companies and service providers are affected in different ways.

Insurers are central to the initial financial steps. On 27 July, France Assureurs announced that the deadline for reporting claims in areas affected by major fires had been extended until 31 August. Businesses should nevertheless document damage as quickly as possible, retain invoices and photographs, and clarify which items their policy covers. The amount reimbursed depends on the contract, agreed deductibles and the assessed damage.

In addition, Urssaf and the Council for the Social Protection of the Self-Employed announced support at the end of July for companies facing difficulties as a result of fires and severe weather. Depending on the individual case, deferred social contribution payments and financial assistance for eligible self-employed people may be available. They do not replace insurance payments, but can safeguard the short-term liquidity of small businesses and sole proprietors.

Employees also face practical and employment-law issues. The FCA trade association points out that short-time work is generally possible when force majeure compels an operational interruption. Business representatives are calling for uniform rules for employees who were unable to reach their workplace because of evacuations, blocked access roads or air pollution. Seasonal businesses are under particular pressure because disruptions during the summer can scarcely be made up for.

The French Directorate General for Enterprise points to a support network comprising chambers of industry and commerce, chambers of trades and crafts, Banque de France, Urssaf and the tax administration. These bodies can assist with a financial assessment and provide information on payment deadlines or credit mediation. Companies in Rognac must now combine insurance claims, public assistance and ongoing obligations into a viable financial plan.

Reconstruction therefore depends on concrete insurance decisions, the replacement of business assets and the return of customers. Until these conditions are met, even companies with premises that remain usable will continue to be economically vulnerable.
