Paris – 29.05.2026: In the third round of the men’s singles competition at Roland Garros, German tennis professional Alexander Zverev faced French player Quentin Halys. The match on Court Philippe-Chatrier developed into an intense duel in front of an enthusiastic crowd, which Zverev ultimately won 6:4, 6:3, 5:7, 6:2 to advance to the round of 16.

Zverev, currently number 3 in the ATP world rankings and seeded number 2 in the tournament, showed an overall convincing performance. Despite a surprising loss of the third set, the 29-year-old did not lose composure. Halys, the local favorite and currently ranked 90th in the world, seized the opportunity with a strong fighting display to take the set 7:5. However, this was not enough to disrupt Zverev’s rhythm for good.

In the first set, Zverev secured an early break which he confidently converted to a 6:4 win. He then controlled the second set, winning it 6:3. In the third set, Halys first achieved the crucial break to claim the set. In the fourth and final set, however, Zverev increased the pace again, benefited from several strong service games, and won the set convincingly 6:2.

With this victory, Zverev will face Dutch player Jesper de Jong in the round of 16. For Halys, the loss means the end of his Roland Garros campaign, but his performance and winning a set against a top player are seen positively. The Frenchman gains valuable experience on the Grand Slam stage.

Away from this duel, 19-year-old Brazilian João Fonseca caused one of the biggest upsets of the tournament by defeating 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic in five sets. Fonseca won 4:6, 4:6, 6:3, 7:5, 7:5, making history.

The tournament conditions in Paris also proved to be an additional challenge: with temperatures reaching up to 33 degrees Celsius, several players experienced heat strain. For example, current world number one Jannik Sinner had to retire early from his match against Argentine Juan Manuel Cerúndolo. This weather poses an extra mental and physical strain.

Roland Garros remains extremely exciting this year due to unexpected twists and strong performances by underdogs. In the coming days, more spectacular matches are expected that will shape the battle for the title.
