Alexander Zverev defeats Quentin Halys in the third set at Roland Garros

Paris – 29.05.2026: During the third round of the men’s singles at Roland Garros, German tennis player Alexander Zverev faced Frenchman Quentin Halys. The match on Court Philippe-Chatrier turned into an intense duel before an enthusiastic crowd, which Zverev ultimately won with a score of 6:4, 6:3, 5:7, and 6:2, thus reaching the round of 16.

Zverev, currently number 3 in the ATP ranking and the tournament’s second seed, delivered a generally convincing performance. Despite the surprising loss of the third set, the 29-year-old was not unsettled. Halys, the home player currently ranked 90th worldwide, seized the opportunity to win the set with a strong fighting performance at 7:5. However, this was not enough to definitively break Zverev’s rhythm.

In the first set, Zverev quickly secured a break which he managed confidently, taking the set 6:4. He then controlled the second set as well, closing it at 6:3. In the third set, Halys achieved the decisive break to take the set. In the fourth and final set, however, Zverev increased the pace, capitalized on several of his service games, and clearly won 6:2.

With this victory, Zverev will face Dutchman Jesper de Jong in the round of 16. For Halys, the elimination marks the end of his Roland Garros journey, but his performance and the set win against a top player are a positive outcome. The Frenchman thus gains important experience on a Grand Slam stage.

Outside of this match, 19-year-old Brazilian João Fonseca caused one of the biggest surprises of the tournament by winning in five sets against 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic. Fonseca prevailed 4:6, 4:6, 6:3, 7:5, and 7:5, making history.

The tournament conditions in Paris proved to be an additional challenge: with temperatures up to 33 degrees Celsius, several players experienced heat-related problems. Among them, world number one Jannik Sinner had to retire early from the match against Argentine Juan Manuel Cerúndolo. This climate represents additional psychological and physical stress.

Roland Garros thus remains extremely exciting this year thanks to unexpected twists and strong performances from outsiders. Spectacular clashes are expected in the coming days that will shape the fight for the title.
