Appeals Verdict on July 7: What Will Decide Marine Le Pen’s Political Future in 2027

Paris – 02.07.2026: The Paris court of appeal has scheduled the verdict in the case concerning the parliamentary assistants of the Rassemblement National for Tuesday, July 7, 2026. At its core is the allegation that employees of the then Front National/Rassemblement National were partly paid with funds from the European Parliament without having been employed in accordance with parliamentary rules. For Marine Le Pen, above all a possible Inéligibilité is at stake — a disqualification from eligibility that would directly affect her participation in the 2027 presidential election.

In the appeal hearing in February, the public prosecutor’s office and the attorney general’s office requested confirmation or tightening of the lower court’s sanctions. On the table are suspended or custodial sentences, financial penalties, and an Inéligibilité of up to five years. It was also suggested not to make an ineligibility necessarily immediately enforceable. Legally, the appeal verdict opens several paths: confirmation of the lower instance, modification of individual points, or a comprehensive new decision on guilt, punishment and any additional sanctions. Also important is the question of whether an Inéligibilité would become immediately effective or whether the court would postpone its enforcement.

For the 2027 electoral calendar, the length and effective start of a ban are decisive. A five-year ineligibility would effectively rule out a presidential bid. A significantly shorter duration — for example two years — could create room for maneuver if the start of the measure does not conflict with the deadlines for candidate registration. Further legal remedies are also conceivable: against an appeals verdict an appeal on points of law can be lodged with the Court of Cassation. Such steps generally do not have a suspensive effect on an Inéligibilité, unless the court has expressly suspended its enforcement. At the level of electoral law, in case of dispute the Conseil constitutionnel examines the admissibility and validity of candidacies.

Politically, the verdict would immediately influence the strategic planning of the Rassemblement National: personnel decisions, possible contingency scenarios and the timing of the presidential primary campaign would have to be adjusted within days. Other parties are also calculating accordingly: an exclusion would change the balance of power in the first round, while the absence of an electoral exclusion would consolidate the status quo in the right-wing camp. Media and electoral authorities would need to quickly clarify deadlines, notification procedures and formal consequences, for example regarding endorsement signatures and campaign financing. Because of the European dimension of the initial allegation, attention beyond France is also to be expected.

Regardless of the outcome, July 7 remains a legally and politically central date. Immediate reactions from parties and institutions are likely; they will focus mainly on the duration, the start date and the precise wording of any Inéligibilité.
