At Least 14 Killed in Suicide Bombing at Rally in Pakistan

Kabal – 02.08.2026: At least 14 people were killed in a suicide bombing targeting a rally against militant groups in Kabal, in Pakistan’s Swat Valley. More than two dozen others were injured, local authorities said on Sunday. The victims included civilians and police officers. The death toll could still rise.

The attacker detonated explosives near a police station in front of which numerous demonstrators had gathered. According to district police chief Omar Khan, the rally was explicitly directed against militant violence. Participants called for greater security and peace in the region. According to the French news channel Franceinfo, a man tried to enter the police station before detonating the explosive device.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial emergency service transported the injured to hospitals. Reliable information about their condition was not initially available. Security forces cordoned off the scene and launched an investigation into the attacker’s identity and the exact sequence of events. Authorities are also examining whether the police station itself was the target.

No group initially claimed responsibility for the attack. Authorities also did not identify a possible perpetrator. In the region, Pakistan’s Taliban movement, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, or TTP for short, is often blamed for attacks. However, there is currently no confirmed evidence of the organization’s involvement in the attack in Kabal.

Kabal is located in the Swat district of the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which borders Afghanistan. The Swat Valley was a center of Islamist violence and the scene of military operations for years. Residents of the region regularly organize public protests because they fear the return of armed groups and renewed restrictions on their daily lives. Rallies such as the one in Kabal are directed against this renewed insecurity while also increasing pressure on the security authorities.

The TTP is organizationally separate from the Taliban ruling Afghanistan, but is considered closely linked to them. Pakistan accuses the group of using safe havens on Afghan territory. The Afghan government rejects those accusations. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is among the provinces most frequently affected by attacks on police, security forces and state institutions.

Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attack and expressed their condolences to the relatives of the victims. The incident comes during a period of heightened violence in the province: as recently as mid-July, a suicide bomber attacked a police station in Bannu. No organization initially claimed responsibility for that attack either.
