Barbara Butch announces complaint against La France insoumise after concert disruption in Grenoble

Grenoble – 23 July 2026: French DJ Barbara Butch intends to file a criminal complaint against La France insoumise (LFI) and individual local party representatives following the interruption of her concert on 18 July at the Cabaret Frappé festival in Grenoble. Her lawyer, Audrey Msellati, said that the proceedings would concern, among other things, allegations of incitement to hatred and violence. Complaints are also to be filed against the far-right media outlet Omerta and essayist Alain Soral.

Barbara Butch’s performance ended on Saturday evening after around twenty minutes. According to consistent media reports, numerous pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered in front of the stage. Slogans and insults were shouted, and objects were thrown toward the stage. The city of Grenoble stopped the event for security reasons. How many people were directly involved and what specific actions may be attributed to them are the subject of the ongoing investigation.

The Grenoble public prosecutor’s office opened an investigation on 21 July on suspicion of collective obstruction of freedoms. This criminal offence is intended, among other things, to ensure that artists can carry out their professional activities without violent or intimidating obstruction. At present, the proceedings concern the course of events rather than the political responsibility of the party. No decisions have yet been made regarding possible suspects, charges or criminal-law assessments.

Before the concert, LFI Grenoble called for a boycott of the artist. As justification, local party representatives referred to the political positions of Barbara Butch, including her support for a controversial bill against antisemitism, as well as previous connections with events in Israel. Following the interruption, local LFI representative Allan Brunon defended the protest as an expression of political freedom of speech. However, the complaint now announced concerns the question of whether calls and public statements may have contributed to an unlawful escalation.

The case has sparked a broader discussion. Party representatives from different political camps criticized the interruption as interference with artistic freedom. At the same time, the dispute continues over where the line lies between a lawful boycott, public protest and the deliberate disruption of an event. From a legal perspective, the decisive question is whether specific individuals called for violence or hatred, or knowingly and jointly disrupted the holding of the concert.

Barbara Butch is among the best-known figures in the French LGBTQ+ club scene and performed at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. In recent years, she has repeatedly been the target of online attacks. The complaints now announced add a civil and criminal law dimension to the conflict in Grenoble. Whether they will be directed against LFI as an organization or primarily against specifically named individuals will depend on the procedural documents submitted and decisions by the judiciary.
