Barbara Butch announces lawsuits after concert interruption in Grenoble

Grenoble – 23 July 2026: Five days after her performance in Grenoble was interrupted, DJ Barbara Butch is considering legal action. The artist announced on Thursday that she intends to file several lawsuits. According to her lawyer, Audrey Msellati, one of them is also directed against La France insoumise. It initially remained unclear which other individuals or bodies might specifically be reported.

The performance took place on Saturday, 18 July 2026, at the municipal Cabaret Frappe festival. According to consistent reports, the DJ set was interrupted after around 20 minutes. Pro-Palestinian demonstrators had gathered in front of the stage. The city of Grenoble subsequently stated that glass bottles and other objects had, among other things, been thrown towards the stage. The exact sequence of events is the subject of the investigation.

The Grenoble public prosecutor’s office opened an investigation on Tuesday, 21 July 2026, on suspicion of collective obstruction of freedoms. The judiciary is thus examining in particular whether the disruption went beyond a political demonstration and was specifically intended to prevent the performance. The authority has so far provided no information on possible suspects, summonses or further investigative measures.

Barbara Butch had been the target of a boycott call ahead of the festival. Critics accused her of taking part in events linked to Israel and supporting a public statement on the then-debated Yadan legislative initiative. The initiative was aimed at combating new forms of antisemitism and was politically controversial. The criticism of the artist developed into a dispute in Grenoble that now extends far beyond the evening of the concert.

Representatives of La France insoumise had publicly supported the mobilization against the performance. The party and its local actors view it as political protest against the DJ’s positions. Whether, and to what extent, this could result in legal responsibility remains open. This will not be decided in political statements, but potentially through the investigation and subsequent court proceedings.

For Barbara Butch, her announcement is not solely about the cancelled music. It also concerns the question of whether cultural workers may be pressured because political views or contacts are attributed to them. Several hundred figures from culture and civil society had already publicly expressed solidarity with her. At the same time, the conflict over the war in the Middle East remains the backdrop against which social tensions in France are increasingly being played out at cultural events as well.

The announced lawsuits have not yet been made public in full, based on the information currently available. It will therefore be crucial which allegations the lawyer substantiates and what evidence she presents to the authorities. Until then, the presumption of innocence applies to all parties involved.
