Paris – 02.07.2026: The discount retailer Lidl delivered around 200,000 fans and mobile air conditioners to its French stores on Thursday, July 2, 2026, according to its own statements. The aim is to meet the strong demand ahead of a new heatwave. The devices of Lidl’s own brand were advertised in the weekly flyers and offered at promotional prices, after shortages had recently been reported in many places.
Reports from several regions of France speak of high customer demand. Queues formed in front of some stores even before opening; promotional areas were in some places bought out within a few hours. Local media described occasional crowding, while other stores organized orderly distributions with quantity limits. Overall, observations suggest that availability of the goods varied greatly by location.
The sales launch coincides with a period of unusually high temperatures: at the end of June, peak values were recorded in many places, which strongly drove demand for cooling devices. Market researchers reported noticeable increases in sales of fans and mobile air conditioners, while retailers confirmed temporary sell-outs in places. The current Lidl promotion should reduce this gap in the short term, but does not replace comprehensive supply – the model mix, delivery quantities and local demand are too heterogeneous for that.
According to reports in the French trade and regional press, Lidl distributes the product contingents on a per-store basis; on average that corresponds here to a little over a hundred devices per market. The chain pointed out that model variety and quantities can vary and that restocks are staggered regionally. Online stocks were partly sold out early. Consumers were urged to check opening hours, promotional notices and possible limits before visiting a store.
At the same time, experts and authorities advise not to rely solely on technical solutions in extreme heat. Recommended are adequate hydration, avoiding the midday heat, regular breaks in cool rooms and special attention to older people, children and those with pre-existing conditions. Municipalities remind people of publicly accessible cooling centers and extended opening hours of some facilities. For apartments without air conditioning, simple measures are effective, for example ventilating early in the morning, shading exposed windows and sparing use of heat-producing appliances.
For retailers the situation remains volatile: depending on temperature development, regional demand peaks and logistics, availability can fluctuate at short notice. Further promotional offers from other chains have been announced or are in preparation. One thing is clear: the combination of sustained heat and limited stocks currently makes fans and mobile air conditioners scarce goods in many regions.
