Bordeaux: Seven criminal complaints over alleged sexual offenses at preschool – City announces child protection plan

Bordeaux – 03.07.2026: Investigations are underway in Bordeaux on suspicion of rapes and sexual assaults at the Frida Kahlo preschool. According to the public prosecutor’s office, seven criminal complaints from parents have been filed so far. The Parquet de Bordeaux has opened a preliminary investigation; details on timing, frequency and possible location of the acts are being withheld for tactical reasons.

The city administration confirmed that two male employees have been provisionally relieved of duty: an Atsem (Agent territorial spécialisé des écoles maternelles) of the school and an external activity leader from the out-of-school sector. For one of the two there had already been a prior report to the judiciary, the town hall said. The suspensions are a precautionary measure and do not imply a presumption of guilt.

The institution in question is part of the Groupe scolaire Frida Kahlo. Since the reports became known, the school inspectorate and the town hall have begun talks with parent representatives. According to reports, psychosocial contact points have been named, and information has been provided on confidential reporting as well as medical and psychological support for children and families. The school management is arranging additional contact persons during drop-off and pick-up times to answer questions promptly.

Investigators are examining complaints, statements and any digital or medical evidence. So far no one has been brought before an investigating judge. The public prosecutor’s office stresses that it is important to safeguard the integrity of the proceedings and the protection of minors while also upholding the presumption of innocence. Police and justice authorities are calling on people to refrain from speculation and from identifying alleged victims on social networks.

The mayor of Bordeaux plans to present a package of measures to strengthen child protection next week. According to initial points, it should include more precise control mechanisms for staff recruitment, ongoing training for employees in schools and leisure programs, and standardized reporting chains in cases of suspicion. The package could be supplemented by additional resources for prevention and counseling.

The case follows a nationwide heightened focus on sexualized violence against minors. At the national level, the responsible ministries and specialist agencies are working on faster reporting channels, better coordination between schools, youth welfare services and the judiciary, as well as guidelines for child-friendly hearings. In Bordeaux the priority is now the careful clarification of the allegations; the school authority intends to regularly inform parents about measures to protect children that are independent of the proceedings, so that teaching can continue under secure conditions.
