Bordeaux tackles discarded cigarettes by impounding cars

Bordeaux – 22 July 2026: A smouldering cigarette butt thrown from a moving car can be far more than a thoughtless gesture these days. In view of the extremely high wildfire risk in the Gironde, the Bordeaux public prosecutor’s office has announced tougher action. Vehicles belonging to people who throw cigarette butts out of the window in natural areas may be sealed.

Public prosecutor Renaud Gaudeul made the exceptional measure public on Wednesday. It targets potential fire causes that originate from people and are avoidable. According to the prosecutor, the car is to be secured as evidence. The courts will decide on any possible criminal classification in each case on the basis of the specific circumstances and the investigation findings.

The announcement comes at a particularly tense time. Authorities in the Gironde had raised the wildfire alert level to its highest level on Tuesday, 21 July. Dry vegetation and high temperatures increase the risk that a small spark will trigger a brush or forest fire within a short time. For firefighters, municipalities and residents, this means a period of heightened vigilance.

At the centre is an everyday scene along roadsides, on country roads and in wooded areas: a vehicle drives on while a burning cigarette falls into dry grass. Particularly in such places, emergency crews can often reconstruct the origin of a fire only with great effort. Impounding a car can help investigators preserve evidence and examine the course of a possible offence.

The measure is not a judgment against individual drivers. It initially focuses on securing evidence and applies only to cases in which there is a corresponding suspicion. Whether charges will be brought, which criminal offences may apply in an individual case and whether a fire was actually caused remain matters for the investigation and, where applicable, court proceedings.

Renaud Gaudeul has served as a public prosecutor in Bordeaux for years. In the current risk situation, his office is working with police and other security agencies. The tougher approach combines two dimensions: protecting people, homes and natural areas on the one hand, and criminal investigations into possible perpetrators on the other.

For drivers, the message is clear: cigarette remnants do not belong out of the window, especially not in landscapes with parched vegetation. At a time when the Gironde is under the highest wildfire alert, a carelessly discarded cigarette butt can become a matter for firefighters, police and the public prosecutor’s office.
