Bordeaux – 22 July 2026: One day after the deaths of two firefighters in a blaze in Merignac, the Bordeaux public prosecutor’s office announced a significant tightening of its approach to risky behavior in the forest and natural areas of Gironde. The focus is on people who light fires there or are found with open flames. The measures are a response to a situation in which minor causes can quickly create major dangers for emergency responders and local residents.
According to the prosecutor’s office, public prosecutor Renaud Gaudeul instructed police and gendarmerie to step up checks. Anyone found using fire in wooded natural areas may be taken into police custody. Investigators are also to arrange for vehicles that may be linked to such an incident to be seized as evidence. The initial aim is to quickly clarify specific suspicions, not to prejudge anyone.
In such cases, the judiciary intends in particular to examine suspicions of endangering other people. This could allow for a significantly stricter legal approach than in cases involving mere breaches of safety regulations. However, which criminal offenses may actually be considered in an individual case depends on the circumstances, the evidence and the results of the investigation. An arrest or seizure also does not constitute a finding of guilt.
The announcement was prompted by the tragedy of 21 July 2026 in Merignac near Bordeaux-Merignac Airport. Two firefighters from the Saint-Medard-en-Jalles area died during an operation. The exact sequence of events in which their vehicle entered the danger zone, as well as the cause of the fire, remain under investigation. The prosecutor’s office had mobilized a larger police presence for these inquiries.
The new approach is not aimed solely at deliberately set fires. It is also intended to cover behavior in which people may create an acute danger through carelessness or disregard for rules. Especially in dry vegetation and windy conditions, a spark, an open flame or improperly discarded embers can trigger a difficult operation within a short time. The risk to emergency responders then increases with every minute.
In Gironde, grief over the two deaths is now accompanied by a clear message from the authorities: fire prevention is not the responsibility of the fire service alone. Anyone in or near forest areas must observe the applicable bans and precautionary rules. The announced checks are not intended to remain symbolic, but to intervene early, before risky behavior leads to a fire and possibly a disaster.
The Merignac case must be considered separately. Whether, and in what way, human actions caused the fire there has not been conclusively established. The investigation is intended to answer precisely that question and reconstruct the circumstances of the two firefighters’ deaths. Until then, the presumption of innocence applies to all parties involved. The prosecutor’s office’s stricter practice concerns future and ongoing suspected cases according to the evidence in each case.
