Bordeaux – 22.07.2026: One day after the deaths of two firefighters in a fire in Merignac, the Bordeaux public prosecutor’s office announced that it would significantly tighten its handling of dangerous behavior in Gironde’s forest and natural areas. The focus is on people who light fires or are found using open flames there. The measures are a response to a situation in which minor causes can quickly create major danger for emergency responders and local residents.
According to the public prosecutor’s office, prosecutor Renaud Gaudeul has instructed police and gendarmes to increase inspections. Accordingly, anyone found using fire in wooded natural areas may be taken into custody. Investigators are also to request the seizure of vehicles that may be connected to the incident as evidence. The primary aim is to quickly clarify specific suspicions, not to convict anyone in advance.
In such cases, the judiciary particularly wants to examine suspicions of endangering others. This could allow for a considerably stricter legal approach than mere violations of protection regulations. However, which criminal offenses may actually be considered in each case still depends on the circumstances, evidence and investigation results. Arrest or seizure also does not mean guilt has been established.
The reason for this announcement was the accident on 21.07.2026 in Merignac, near Bordeaux-Merignac Airport. Two firefighters from the Saint-Medard-en-Jalles area died while on duty. The exact sequence of events that brought their vehicle into the danger zone, as well as the cause of the fire, are still under investigation. The public prosecutor’s office has deployed a larger police force for this investigation.
The new approach is not aimed only at deliberate arson. It also seeks to cover conduct through which, due to negligence or disregard for regulations, an immediate danger may be created. Especially when vegetation is dry and windy conditions prevail, a spark, an open flame or improperly discarded embers can quickly lead to a difficult emergency operation. The risk to rescue personnel then increases by the minute.
In Gironde, grief for the two victims is now accompanied by a clear message from the authorities: fire prevention is not solely the task of the fire service. Anyone in or near forest areas must comply with current bans and precautionary rules. The announced inspections are not intended to be symbolic, but to intervene early before dangerous conduct turns into a fire and potentially a disaster.
The incident in Merignac must be considered separately from this. There is still no final conclusion as to whether human action caused the fire there and, if so, how. The investigation aims to answer precisely this question and reconstruct the circumstances that led to the deaths of the two firefighters. Until then, all parties involved are entitled to the presumption of innocence. The public prosecutor’s stricter practice applies to future and ongoing suspected cases, depending on the evidence in each case.
