Brazilian Court Bars Milei Visit to Bolsonaro

Brasilia – 18/07/2026: A planned visit with major political symbolism has been barred: Argentine President Javier Milei may not meet Jair Bolsonaro at his house arrest residence in Brasilia on July 25. Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes rejected a request from Bolsonaro’s defense team. As a result, the former head of state remains shielded even during the announced Brazil visit by his close political ally.

According to the Supreme Federal Court, STF, Bolsonaro is currently subject to stricter conditions. His visitation rights have been suspended for 30 days; ongoing medical and physiotherapy treatments as well as meetings with his lawyers are exempt. In addition, Bolsonaro may not receive visits that could have a political or election-related purpose until the end of Brazil’s election period.

Milei had announced that he would travel to Brazil on Saturday, July 25, 2026. In addition to an appearance in Sao Paulo, a stop in Brasilia to meet Bolsonaro had been planned. The former president’s defense team had requested authorization for this. The justice has now explicitly denied it. Milei’s trip to Brazil is therefore not prohibited in principle, but the private meeting with Bolsonaro has been ruled out.

The case shows how closely legal restrictions and the emerging election campaign in Brazil have become intertwined. Bolsonaro was sentenced to more than 27 years in prison for his role in the attempted coup following the 2022 election and is under house arrest. His inner circle has repeatedly criticized the ruling and the restrictions associated with it.

According to Brazilian media reports, the trigger for the new limitations was a letter from Bolsonaro that his son, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, read out publicly. In Moraes’s view, this violated existing rules under which Bolsonaro may not use social media directly or indirectly for political messages. The justice therefore saw grounds to further tighten control over the former president’s contacts.

For Milei, the cancellation is more than a matter of travel plans. The Argentine president has demonstratively cultivated close ties with the Bolsonaro family for years and had already signaled support for Flavio Bolsonaro. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Milei are politically far apart. The prohibited meeting now underscores that Brazil’s judiciary is scrutinizing possible campaign contacts involving a convicted former president particularly strictly.

The decision initially applies only to the requested appointment on July 25, 2026, and to the current restrictions. It was not known on Saturday whether Bolsonaro’s defense team would pursue further legal remedies or submit a new visitation request later. For now, the door in Brasilia remains closed – not because of diplomatic tensions, but due to a judicial order in ongoing enforcement proceedings.
