Caracal Helicopter Surveys the Gironde Wildfire at Night

Merignac – 30 July 2026: During the large-scale wildfire in Gironde, a Caracal helicopter of the French Air and Space Force is conducting nighttime reconnaissance. On board, a fire service observer monitors the spread and intensity of the blaze as well as particularly vulnerable areas. Their assessments are transmitted directly to incident command and personnel on the ground.

These flights are especially important during the hours when firefighting aircraft cannot carry out water drops. Throughout the night, the helicopter crew provides a continuous picture of the fire front. This enables incident command to deploy vehicles more precisely, secure threatened areas and adapt protective measures for the population. Changes in wind direction, dense smoke and newly flaring fire hotspots can also often be detected from the air earlier than from the ground.

The Caracal is not used as a firefighting helicopter. The versatile military aircraft is deployed for reconnaissance, command of operational personnel and, when necessary, the rapid transport of staff. The combination of aviation capability and expert assessment by a fire service observer fills an important gap at night. This is precisely when a vegetation fire can shift unnoticed, while limited visibility makes the work of crews more difficult.

On 27 July, the French Ministry of the Armed Forces reported extensive military support for firefighting operations. In addition to personnel and vehicles from the air force fire service, further resources were deployed to the affected region. International assistance was also provided: according to the ministry, Germany made available two CH-53 transport helicopters as well as additional equipment.

The fire had spread since 22 July north of the Bassin d’Arcachon and affected several municipalities in Gironde. Because of the exceptionally high risk of vegetation fires, authorities ordered extensive protective measures. Smoke from the fire also led Atmo Nouvelle-Aquitaine to step up air-quality monitoring.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, more than 116,000 hectares in France had been affected by fires since the start of the year by the end of July. In Gironde and the neighboring departement of Landes, the state, fire services, armed forces and gendarmerie increased their presence. The most up-to-date possible information on wind, smoke and the course of the flames is essential for coordinating these forces.

Nighttime aerial reconnaissance therefore complements observation on the ground. It helps incident commanders identify new embers and changes in the fire’s direction at an early stage, even while firefighting aircraft are grounded and smoke restricts firefighters’ visibility.
