Case of the murder of Christiane Commeau: anonymous letters lead to reopening of the investigation

Chassieu – 06/13/2026: More than two decades after the violent death of Christiane Commeau near Lyon, there are new developments in the case. The 54-year-old woman had disappeared without a trace in October 2004 from her apartment in Chassieu. Only in February 2005 was her body discovered in a forest near Niévroz, in the Ain department. Investigations concluded that she had been killed by two gunshots to the back of the head. Despite thorough investigations, both the perpetrator and the motive remained unknown for a long time.

At the end of 2025, two women in Voiron, about 70 kilometers from Chassieu, received anonymous letters. The mailings contained excerpts from the novels of the “San-Antonio” series, accompanied by handwritten notes referencing important dates and events in Christiane Commeau’s life. One of the letters said, for example: “What are you doing this Monday, September 30?” These clues led authorities to suspect that the sender had personal information about the victim.

Due to these new leads, the Paris prosecutor’s office in Nanterre, which handles a special section for unresolved cases, reopened the cold case in autumn 2025. The case had previously been closed in 2015. Investigators now hope to identify the murderer thanks to the new information.

In June 2026, the case was brought back to public attention on television: in the program “Appel à témoins” on M6, viewers were invited to provide any relevant information to shed light on the murder of Christiane Commeau. Special attention was given to the fact that the anonymous letters suggest a connection between the sender and the victim.

Christiane Commeau’s family expressed relief at the reopening of the investigation. For years they have demanded clarity and a just resolution of the case. The relatives appeal to the public to share any information that might help solve the crime.

Despite the long time passed and investigative difficulties, the murder is still considered unsolved. Investigators continue to rely on public help and possible new leads to shed light on this mysterious crime. The Christiane Commeau case therefore remains a priority for French justice and the families involved.

The role of the anonymous letters with literary references represents an unusual aspect that has reignited public interest in the case. Whether these clues will actually lead to the identification of the culprit remains to be seen in the coming months.
