Five complaints over suspected sexual offences at a nursery school in Bordeaux – investigations launched

Bordeaux – 01/07/2026: The Bordeaux public prosecutor’s office has opened a preliminary criminal investigation following complaints filed by several parents over alleged rapes and sexual assaults at a municipal nursery school. According to consistent local reports, the justice system is currently aware of five complaints. Investigations into the specific circumstances are ongoing; the relevant police services have collected evidence and conducted initial interviews.

According to statements issued so far, the investigation centers on two non-teaching staff members (ATSEM), who carry out daily care and support duties in French nursery schools. Specific coercive measures, such as arrests or appearances before the authorities, have not been confirmed by the authorities so far. The presumption of innocence applies to all those involved until a court determines otherwise.

Parents, the school management, and the municipality have been in close contact since the allegations became known. According to administrative sources, immediate protective measures have been adopted for the children concerned. This generally includes adapted care plans, separating potentially problematic contact arrangements, as well as psychosocial support. The Académie leadership and the Direction des services départementaux de l’Éducation nationale are involved; the municipality emphasizes that it considers safety and care a priority.

Legally, the public prosecutor’s office is examining whether a formal judicial investigation is necessary or whether inquiries will continue as part of a preliminary investigation. At the same time, employment and disciplinary measures against staff may be considered, provided they are necessary to protect the children and ensure the investigation. Medical examinations and confidential interviews of minors in France are generally conducted under specific protection protocols to avoid possible trauma and secure evidence with procedural value.

The case comes amid increased awareness of abuse in care and educational facilities. Since the beginning of 2026, several departments have strengthened reporting plans and internal monitoring mechanisms; in many places, cooperation between the justice system, police, education inspectorate, and municipalities has been standardized. Specialized services point out that indications must be documented early, parents must be informed without delay, and staff must receive close support.

Parents’ associations in Bordeaux are demanding transparent information about the protection measures in force at the affected school and about possible reviews of organization and supervision. Meanwhile, investigative authorities are calling for caution regarding speculation and for the protection of the children’s privacy. The analysis of statements and other evidence will, according to the current status, take several days; the public prosecutor’s office will provide information on the next steps as soon as possible without jeopardizing the proceedings.
